Music only gets you so far...

As much as I enjoy running, I am a bored (if not boring) runner. If the weather is perfect and the scenery is inspiring, I can run for many miles just content to take in my surroundings.  But most of the time, I require something to occupy my brain while on a long run. After all, as I revealed in this post, I am a bad relaxer.

Although I do enjoy listening to music while running (smooth jazz is my soundtrack of choice), after thirty minutes, music no longer holds my interest and I find myself falling into a mental state of inertia, glancing frequently at my watch, wondering if its time to go home. The writer in me wants a story; words and sentences to pass the time, to keep me focused on something other than my tired legs.  Luckily for me, there is a huge variety of audiobooks available to appease weary runners such as myself.  And even luckier still, is that the state of Maryland (and likely many other states), offer a library of audiobooks that you can download for free!

If you haven't yet heard about the Maryland Digital eLibrary Consortium, then consider yourself enlightened by the information that follows.  The Digital eLibrary Consortium is a virtual library that you can access from you computer and download ebooks AND audiobooks for 7-14 days using your library card.  You can download as many as 4 titles at a time and load them directly into your smartphone, iPod or most any other digital music device you use. I have downloaded dozens of books using this service, thus allowing me to spend more time running while enjoying a good book without spending a cent.
